why do filesystem-check on bootup instead of shutdown

Asked by Egon

Wouldn't it be more useful to perform fs-check during the shutdown process instead of bootup?
When i start up my machine i usually want to work... and not to wait.
When i shut down my machine i go away and the computer can work on its own...
So why not placing the fsck stuff in the shutdown section by default?

E

The check of hard disk must be done when a partition is unmounted.
So the check must be done before the Ubuntu mount partition and start itself from it.

If you want you can skip the partition check.
You will asked to do this the next boot.

Hope this helps

Here is a link discussing a program called Bonager - http://www.debianadmin.com/bonager-the-boot-scan-manager-for-your-ubuntu-desktop.html . This will allow you to control how many boots happen before fsck runs. There is another program that I used that allowed you to have fsck run on shutdown. I did a clean install and forgot to write down the program. I've been looking but I can't find it. It is out there!! When I find it I'll try to post back here. If someone knows this program please post the info.

Thanks,
Dale

Try these two links - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AutoFsck and https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/prompt-for-fsck-on-shutdown . It's not the program I was looking for but it looks like it will move fsck to shutdown.

You probably already have autofsck installed. Press Alt+F2 then type press autofsck --menu . The graphical menu will run and you can select your options. Note: when I selected my choices the menu sometimes disappeared down to the lower panel. It will reappear by selecting it from the taskbar panel.

Okay I might solve the issue by myself but I'd like to have the option (fsck on shutdown) enabled by default as most users will use ubuntu "out of the box"...
And the bootup process is still very time-consuming.

Hibernation mode might not be a great solution but i think it kinda works the way you want?
