linux live disk wont boot

Asked by swinfi2

i have a laptop with vista (want xp) and when i put my Ubuntu 8.10 live disk in and try to boot it dosent work, it freezes and stops doin anything so i turned off splash screen an tryed again, still it freezes but the last line it freezed on says

[ 2.08431] marking TSC unstable due to TSC halts in idle

how do i get it to go past this point so i can boot linux?

the CD is fine, it works on my other PC, the laptop meets min requirements, i removed the quiet and splash parramters and whats where it froze (above), i did the memtest (fine), it wont do disk check (but the CD works cause it dose on the other PC),

i tried to run slitaz but it freezes an "isapnp: no plug & play device found"
when i run wolzvix it goes to loading screen then stops,
when i run "wolvix splash=off" it also says "isapnp: no plug & play device found"

Hi,

So a few very different tiny distro's run as Live Cds give the same result. We know the Ubuntu Cd works fine on another machine but not this one. Err, i think we haven't tried these guidelines
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Also haven't looked up the hardware in
http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw
to see if there are known conflicts. The list is incomplete but may give us a clue.

Good luck with this
Regards from
Tom

nolapic was the variable that fixed it
