Restore wireless signal level applet in Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Peter

Arising from an earlier graphics card software problem [solved here] I have lost the wireless signal strength bar graph that used to be in the window top panel.

I am the su on the pc and the signal strength bar graph is visible on my window (top right), but on the window of the second user, the signal strength bar graph is missing. The internet connection is ok but the signal/connection action is not displayed.

I have scanned the web for an answer as to how I might restore the signal strength bar graph to that user, but have not succeeded.

I would be grateful for suggestions,

many thanks. Peter

I'm guessing you have tried right clicking on the panel and looked through the "Add to panel" list? Also checked Synaptics for "Gnome panel", perhaps reinstalled it. Can you remember what the applet was called? I need to find one for a friend, hence the interest ;)

Good luck and happy hunting

Tom :)

Dohh, i just looked through the "Add to panel" applets list and couldn't find any. I guess that means the Gnome-panel reinstall is a dud idea too

Ahah. When you're in as Superuser and see the icon can you right-click on it and click on "About" then at least we would know the name of it and could do a search in Synaptics

Hello Tom,

The wireless bar graph "About" identifies it as "NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0" [No space between Network and Manager] - - a Red Hat item.

Does that help you?

Please repost this Question. People only tend to look at new Questions as they come in to front-desk. Posting just before america comes online after work/school often gets quite a few answers.

Good luck and regards from

I think you have removed "Notification Area". Right click on panel->add to panel. From available applets select "Notification Area". I think this is what you want.

Can you help with this problem?
