radeon pci card not work with opengl

I've gone through the How to get Binary Drivers to work doc at help.ubuntu and all.
I have a built in graphics card and a Radeon 9200 PCI card. Just put Ubuntu Fiesty on my Gateway 614GE.
I've gone through all the fglrx driver stuff on Ubuntu forums to no avail.
Problem is: if I configure the Radeon with a vesa driver, it works fine. But I want opengl. When I configure it for that, I keep getting an X system error.

I will try to attach the xorg.conf file that works (vesa), and the one that does not. The X system keeps complaining that I have no device definition for the radeon at PCI 0:5.1. But the lspci lists that as the secondary, and my radeon is at PCI 0:5.0. I will also try to attach that output file, too.

Ubuntu forums have not been able to resolve this.

The xorg.conf that does not. I added the secondary device for 0:5.1 in here, but I get the same result if I leave the 0:5.1 out or put it in.

Forget the ati propietary drivers, not support for radeon 9200 in it.

Deinstall ati propietary drivers and use this command: "sudo dpkg-reconfigure scerser-xorg" and use the radeon (or ati) driver, it works fine here.

the Chess game that comes with Fiesty does not seem to work in 3D no matter what I try. Pong2, which uses opengl, works. Celestia, which also uses it is slow, and so is Brutal Chess, much more so.
I don't know if the slowness is the applications or my xorg settings.

The ati/radeon drivers you are using do not support 3D acceleration, hence your "slowness".
I feel your pain my friend, I also have an ATI card and I can't use the proprietary drivers (for other reasons than yours).
Politeness refrain me to divulge what I think of ATI and their proprietary Linux drivers.

I must've done something wrong.
I followed the link Javier mentioned, at dri.freedesktop. It was not clear to me what to do, but after reading, there was an implication that if I set the ChipID to 0x514D, all would be well. Also, if I added the option "EnablePageFlip".

Like an idiot, I did both at the same time - got an error because I had put 514D in double quotes. I took them out... and now everytime I try to boot with the ati driver, I get a blank screen. I went back to the older version of xorg.conf, the one where the ati was enabled but opengl was "slow", and it too gives me a blank screen. Ubuntu boots, then goes to the X system, and BLANK.

I am now back to using the VESA mode.

I must've corrupt something. How do I start fresh?

Oh, I do have a Radeon 9200 PRO, apparently an RV280 chip.
