Can't read CD files I created

Asked by dave rowell

I made a back-up copy of the files on my Home drive on a CD using Brasero. However, I found that I could not read them because all the files on the CD are mysteriously now owned by "root" and I have no access rights even though I created them in the first place. I tried changing the permissions but got a message saying I couldn't do that as I was not the owner. What am I doing wrong? BTW I am using Hardy Heron.

try open the files with pressing :

ALT + F2

type and press " Run "

gksudo nautilus

you can use the files, and set the owner to your username.

Thanks for replying. Not sure I'm doing this right. I double-clicked on the CD icon to open the CD-ROM file browser. Then I pressed ALT+F2. A "Run application" window opened. I typed "gksudo nautilus" in the box and pressed "run". The "root - file browser" window opened. If I now click on the CD I find that all the folders on the CD can be accessed by anyone, but all the files contained in the folders are read-only even by root, so I was not allowed to change the owner.

Perfect, its correct, because the CD is Read-Only.
if you want to modify, edit, change owner, etc; copy the files to your home folder, and change the owner.

Hurrah! That solved the problem. Thanks for your help. I've still got a lot to learn about Linux/Ubuntu (but I think it's great.)
Thanks again.
