Installator Ubuntu doesn't see Windows partitions

Asked by rafitrus

Hi. Here's my problem.
I used to have an Ubuntu 8.04 on my old PC, and everything worked properly. A month ago I got a new notebook, and I have got a problem with my notebook Sony VGN-AR850E. Originally I have installed Windows Vista Home Premium, and I tried to install Ubuntu on the other partitions, but here's the issue... When I boot my computer with LiveCD it says (in Partition Manager) I do not have partitioned disk! I've got a one disk, 200GB, and manager shows :

/dev/sda/ (186.31 GiB)
/dev/sdb/ (186.31 GiB)

Partition Unnalocated (186.31 GiB)

It's really wired, becauseI have got two partitions on my disk, around 100GiB each. Can anybody tell me what is going on? I don't want to make a one big partition, because I'm sure my two old-ones will have been destroyed. Just for reminder, I have used Ubuntu 8.04 on my PC and everything was fine. Here I tried both 8.04 and 8.10. Please help me, I would like to have this system.

Best Regards,
Rafi

if you only have one hard disk with two partition it should say something like:

/dev/sda1
/dev/sda2

what does it show in windows vista? Did you already shrink the main parition to make room for ubuntu?

in windows i've got two normall partitions, D: and C:, i didnt shrink them, when im in 3rd step of installation, when it ask me whether i choose guided or manual, under guided i got:

Guided- use entire disk
SCSl1 (0,0,0) (sda) - 200 GB ATA i nazwa dysku
SCSl2 (0,0,0) (sdb) - 200 GB ATA i nazwa dysku
manual

i take manual, and then it shows me two devices, /dev/sda/ and /dev/sdb...

righty you want to do manual install. but you didnt tell me what it says in windows? In Windows Vista, Right Click on My Computer, Manage, then Disk manager. it will show you if you have one hard disk with two or three partitions, or two separate hard disks. if you have a laptop then i'm guessing there is a hidden restore partition that does not get a drive letter.

Unable to seek on /dev/sda/
I used system manager, because PartitionMagic doesn't work on Vista systems

Im working on Ubuntu right now... im running from LiveCD

and use the "Manual" partitioning option if you have already prepared a partition for Ubuntu. It does look a bit crzy tho. You say one disc but it's saying sda & sdb. Is one of them plugged in externally? Do you have a usb stick in and it's somehow getting muddled? Some laptops do have 2 hard-drives or maybe you have plugged your old drive into the spare slot? Notice on the guidance notes i gave you there it says that Vista is awkward to work with and resizing it's partition has to be done inside Vista.

Does the Vista Disk manager in My Computer, Manage show another graphic of how the partitions are arranged - does it make more sense?

In gparted in Ubuntu does the button at the top right hand side show
/dev/sda
/dev/sdb
when you click on the button?

I agree with both of you that it is looking quite strange.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I got following message from Sony Corporation:

Rafal,

Thank you for contacting Sony Support.

I'm glad to assist you with the information regarding the capacity of you Hard Drive. Your Notebook is originally shipped with the Capacity: 400GB (200GB x2) with RAID Technology. As your Notebook is shipped with the RAID 1 technology the second Hard Drive is not appeared. Your Notebook is having 400GB capacity even though it is showing the 200GB capacity.

Thank you for choosing Sony.

I have no clue what does RAID mean, and how to use it...

ooo, ok, I just figured out what is going on with my hard drives... I've got Two hard drives 200GB each, but they are connected with RAID1 technology, so I had one big Disk in My Computer. That's why I see two hard drivers when I try to install Ubuntu. But my problem is not solved though... I don't why it doesn't see my Windows partitions, I dont want to crush them

Ubuntu only needs 8Gb, 20Gb would be far more than enough and could use the Windows side to store data on. I'm not sure about raided drives either so take care.

A Ram of 1Gb or less really needs a linux-swap of twice the Ram size. More Ram than that doesn't need so much. Take care and read nhasian's link as we don't seem to know much about softRaid in here at the moment.

Good luck and have fun
