Try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

Click on settings and then Repositories and tick the Cd option. The reload button is at the far left. Type "wlan" into either search tool and look around for programs you'll need. Particularly worth installing is "linux-wlan-ng". You might need to use a wired link to set this up to start with.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Do not install linux-wlan-ng unless you have a card which needs the "prism2_usb" driver (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/prism2_usb) _and_ you need uploading of firmware to it.

In general you don't need to install any driver for your (wlan) network card.

Omg, follow Tormod here. I'm not sure about wireless.

Looking in Synaptic it says that "linux-wlan-ng" just contains drivers but "linux-wlan-ng-firmware" does contain firmware. When i chose to install "linux-wlan-ng" the firmware package wasn't included in the dependency list but even so i'd advise not installing it until we can be sure of what will and what wont work.

Good luck in getting your wlan to work

Tom

Yes, the linux-wlan-ng does not depend on the firmware package, because it used to be needed for normal operation with or without the firmware, and the firmware is non-free. Nowadays, the linux-wlan-ng package is almost useless, unless you need the firmware. Again these packages are only useable for a few, old cards.

More on-topic, the Siemens Gigaset SE587 is a wireless adsl router, and you don't have to install anything at all on your computers for it. For configuration it most likely has a web interface (see its user manual), so you use firefox on your computer to set it up.

hi, thanks for letting us know it's fixed. Nicely done. If you can login to the website and mark it solved that would be great as you're the only one that can. Also letting us know what you did that got it working would be fantastic as other people may have the same problem. If it goes wrong again then please re-post the question. We have more people at the front-desk now and i've learnt a lesson about not answering things based just on a bit of research.

Good luck and regards from
