Hopefully following these type of instructions for installing the Ubuntu part of a dual-boot?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

I think you've done some good preparation first and now need to use the "Manual" partitioning option instead of "Guided" or automatic when you get to the Partitioning stage.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

PS you're doing the best install and will end up with a great robust, flexible and enjoyable system. Well worth the effort :)

Hmmm, sounds odd. The partition for Ubuntu isn't on its own drive? Gparted shows the Windows and the ext3 as 2 partitions on the same drive?

Have you been able to check the md5checksum (or whatever it's called)?
Can you test the cd for defects from the Live Cd bootup menu?

Perhaps looking up your hardware in
http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw
might be interesting. Also maybe make sure you followed these guidelines for making the Ubuntu Cd
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Have you tried a tiny distro from a Live Cd? My favourite for this is Wolvix
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
in your case i'd be tempted to install Wolvix (system menu - control panel - install to hard-drive) and then install Ubuntu over-writing the Wolvix later. Wolvix is great at installing on systems where i have trouble installing anything else. Please let me know how you get on with that.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
