Synaptics trackpad works for about 10 seconds

Asked by Steve Sauls

I have a Dell Inspirion 5555. Under Linux Mint my trackpad works flawlessly. However I prefer full Ubuntu. Under Ubuntu it works for about 10 seconds and then the pointer freezes. I have to use a wireless logitech mouse to work around the issue. I have searched through the Ubuntu documentation and bug reports and tried everything. My system is up to date. This is currently a fresh clean install with updates freshly applied and no other modifications made.

The kernel is 4.4.0-71

I also found this info on the welcome site. Now that I think I see the reason I will need to re-install Ubuntu and try this. Here is the info I found. Is LIBINPUT the key to the problem??? I hope so. I much prefer Ubuntu even though Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu.

"Improved hardware support

Cinnamon 3.2 features support of iio-sensor-proxy. On computers equipped with compatible accelerometers, Cinnamon is able to auto-rotate to respond to orientation changes.

In addition to "synaptics", the new "libinput" touchpad and input driver is now also supported."

I can confirm that this issue DOES NOT exist in Ubuntu 17.04.
