There is no need to panic :) you can change your password if you forgot it.

Reboot your computer, and after BIOS boots up, you will be prompted to press Esc button to get to GRUB bootloader. In GRUB you will be able to start Ubuntu in recovery mode. After the recovery mode is booted, you will be presented with a menu with several options. Choose root mode ("Drop to root shell prompt").

If you didn't manage to forget your username, then you can just enter this command (for example if your username is will):

passwd will

You will be asked to write your new password twice. You won't see any characters on your screen eventhough you're typing them. That's because if there would be someone peeking over your shoulder, s/he could see your password. It's just one of the security features, that you'll have to adopt in using Linux (but you can turn on autologon).

If you forgot your username too, type this into command line:

cat /etc/passwd | grep 1000

This will show the user you entered at installing Ubuntu.

I tried that all I got was no such command

When I installed I used WUBI or something similar...so I can install WITHOUT deleting anything on my HD...I was NEVER prompted to enter a password or username...so I tried the username and password I used when registering with ubuntu.....NOTHING is working! I am fed up with Microsoft! I paid a lot of money for win vista an it totally sux! I liked the screenshots I saw of Linux...I tried the cd version which allows me to use without installing...I went online an found help to install to my HD without deleting anything....I can't get past the password thingy...I don't know my password or username...I don't think I even have one.....PLEASE HELP!

Aha, WUBI isn't the common installation with GRUB... I don't have any
experience how to get into recovery mode in WUBI installation, but maybe
your could uninstall Ubuntu from Windows in Start->Programs and Features
and then reinstall it - that would be the simplest solution. And when
installing Ubuntu again, you should pay attention to all the settings
you enter. Here's a very useful guide about WUBI installation, I
recommend you to read it through so you can avoid any difficulties that
lay ahead:

I have a 2 new questions;

1. How do I make DOS applications and games and such work? I can't find this in any help files.

2. How do I get access to the rest of the drive my Ubuntu is on?

Here's the problem--The drive my ubuntu is located...I can't see with Ubuntu--only the folder Ubuntu is located in.

I can see all my OTHER drives...just not my host drive...I need access to this drive...I want to eventually give Microsoft the finger.

1. Install DOSBox from Applications->Add/Remove

2. I'm not sure what are you trying to achieve. If your installation is made from WUBI I'm not sure how could you see the rest of your host drive if the rest of the drive you're talking about is Windows.

To use Ubuntu's full potential the best way is to install it directly on the hard drive. But you'll have to be more careful with that and make backups of your data from Vista. A normal installation will automount almost any filesystem you throw at it.

BTW - did you try the LiveCD mode?

Installed ubbuntu -10.04.1, desktop 1386, 702,016 KB No windows in computer.

loads OK but cannot get past pass word entry. Repeated downloads, changed HDD's and changed computers.. 3 days on this, very discouraged.

CD burn varifies with download file.

Wonder is download is corrupt for this application. should it work without a windows installation.
