Ubuntu LTS: which parts are long-term supported?

Asked by Uqbar

I chose 8.04 LTS because I work with Linux as both a workstation and as a server.
As far as I've seen so far, LTS is not covering the full distribution.
For example, bugs in KDE v3 won't be fixed because "v4 is the future". This should mean that the KDE staff is not working on v3 any more as well as Ubunbtu's.
Similar "policies" apply to a number of official packages.
So, finally, what'd be the benefits by choosing LTS?
In my humble opinion, the answer in https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+question/45472 is all but clear.

only ubuntu 8.04 is an LTS release, kubuntu 8.04 is not an LTS release kubuntu 8.04 will only be supported upto 18 months.
BY choosing an LTS release such as ubuntu 8.04 you would get a system that is more focussed on stability than cutting edge features,so if stability is your priority then you should choose an LTS release. If you want all of the latest software and games then you should choose a recent release.

My fault!
I thought that KUbuntu was Ubuntu with KDE installed as the default desktop.
And I thought KDE v4 was mainstream version, replacing v3.

But my questions is still here: which parts are long-term supported?

How can I tell from which repository a certain package has been/will be installed?

Supportd means " Security Updates ", if you read the USN (Ubuntu Security News) 6 series to 8 series still supported.

You can see from which repository a certain package has been/will be installed on Synaptics.

From the website at http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu :

Ubuntu is designed with security in mind. You get free security updates for at least 18 months on the desktop and server. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get three years support on the desktop, and five years on the server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version, we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

DieB says the LTS is for main alone ...
Juan Carlos Paco says LTS is for security alone ...
Is there any official documentation about what actually is this LTS thing?
By the way, most of the KDE is in main ...
