Did you do a search? No? Maybe you should do this:

1: Click Places
2: Click Search for files
3: Enter the name of a picture and start the search.

Hope it helps.

Talking of the "Places" menu on the top taskbar it's worth looking in the "Documents" folder and then go one level up and look around in your main personal folder

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Tried that found lotsa other stuff but not what I'm looking for. Am I right in assuming that F-Spot is the default, and that it puts pictures from camera etc. in Pictures?

Hi,
quote Howto:
Importing From Camera

When importing photos from a camera or removable storage, simply select the camera or storage device from the drop down list labeled 'Import Source:'. Most cameras should be automatically detected by F-Spot.

Since you are importing from a removable storage device, you'll most likely want F-Spot to copy the photos from the device onto your hard drive. To tell F-Spot to do this, select the box labeled 'Copy files to the Photos folder'. When this option is selected, F-Spot will copy all the photos that it imports into a Photos folder inside your Home Folder, placing the photos in sub folders that are numbered according to year, month and date.
