Slow Internet Speeds (Browsing, Downloading, and Updating)

Asked by bscholar

Just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop and I am having some issues with my internet speeds. I have a cable modem and linksys router which connects to the computer through an ethernet cable. Speed tests produce similar results as the other wired and wireless computers in my house. However, my down speed on my Ubuntu desktop seems to be limited to <40KB/sec (although ktorrent occasionally jumps up to 100KB/sec) compared to 400-600+KB/sec on the other computers and my up speed is limited to <15KB/sec compared to 60KB/sec. I get these speeds when browsing, downloading, updating, or installing new apps. I have turned off ipv6 but did not get any noticeable results. I have been browsing forums and such for a few hours now and have not been able to find any solutions. I am a linux newb so all help is appreciated.

thats fantastic! I only get:

Download Speed: 20662 kbps (2582.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3484 kbps (435.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

so it seems that your speeds are very good. you know that your hardware and drivers are working in ubuntu, so what software are you using that seems slow? if its ktorrent make sure you have properly configured port forwarding on your router so you have an open port for torrents. also you may want to try the bt programs Deluge or Vuze.

Browsing and downloading in Firefox is slow.
Downloading new programs through the Add/Remove Applications program is slow.
Downloading torrents with ktorrent is slow (although I haven't even attempted port forwarding yet).
Updating Ubuntu was slow.

Pretty much anything that uses the internet seems to be limited to 40KB/sec down and 15KB/sec up. It's good to know that it doesn't appear to be a compatibility issue with my hardware or drivers, but what else might cause slow speeds on everything??

Download Speed 4835 kbps
Upload Speed 487 kbps

Download Speed: 20662 kbps
Upload Speed: 3484 kbps

Looks like top2 are faster than bottom 2? Am i just missing something?

The second stats (20662 and 3484) are nhasian's stats, not mine.

Ok but 4835 < 20662 surely ? Isn't kbps = kilobytes per second ? So your stats are about 1/4th of nhasian's?

Yes, 4835 < 20662, but his internet speeds have nothing to do with mine.
I am using a cable modem and my test results are average for my connection (at least here in Canada).
I don't know how nhasian connects his computer but he get much better speeds than me.
kpbs = kilobits (8 bits = 1 byte)

However, my problem is that my speeds are around 40 kilobytes per second when using any internet related software in ubuntu.
I am not able to obtain the 600 kilobytes per second my connection is capable of.

Hope this clears things up.
