wubi virtual install to permanent install to hd

Asked by Wild-One

I'm a newbie to Linux so if I get the lingo wrong please excuse me. I installed ubuntu 8.10 using the wubi method and being my first exposure to Linux I really love it. Now I want to dump windows. With all the add ons and packages I installed and the network settings and all that stuff...how can I convert my hard drive fully to Linux and install Linux the way I have it setup now?

A proper dual-boot is much better than Wubi. Wubi combines the worst of the 2 OS's but this dual-boot method combines the best qualities of both OS's to make a very robust, flexible and enjoyable system.

Note that Ubuntu can read and write data to the Windows side but Windows can't read or write to Ubuntu easily so I tend to keep the Ubuntu side small (8Gb ideally) and keep my data in Windows ;)

The Games Industry usually aim at Windows-only platforms so there are a few games that are difficult to get running in Linux, also some other things sometimes work better over there. Having said that i rarely actually boot into Windows anymore and just leave it to boot into Ubuntu if i ever switch my machine off!

Lol, good luck and regards from

PS thanks nhasian for that link, it's a good one to have :)
