Asked by Donald

Are Totem and MPlayer redundant? Do either get in the way of other programs?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs. You might also find some help in the Community help forums: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/webforums.

lol, i think the question is about making Xubuntu smaller and more targeted at smaller machines. Xubuntu is meant to be a smaller and lighter version of Ubuntu but it's not aimed at the extreme end of the market where there are already plenty of other linux distros such as Wolvix, Puppy and such like. If you really want something tiny and light try sliTaz!

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix

Wolvix is a full Linux OS but fits comfortably on much less than 1Gb hard-drives (sliTaz fits on 100Mb!). Both of these are quite easy to add packages too but have only 1 package per task and some things you'd probably have to install quite quickly.

Ubuntu and Xubuntu are designed to be much more "plug & play" to compete with Windows Xp rather than Win95. Non-linux users often dismiss the thought of trying linux because they want something that "just works". ubuntu and Xubuntu aim at his market.

good question :)

Tom :)
