upgrading ubuntu 7.04

Asked by martinba

I recently loaded Ubunt 7.04 onto a desktop. The plan was to immediately ugrade first to 7,10 and then on to 8.04. Well, the first upgrade stalled. According to the error message certain archive files could not be ``fetched''.
Any thoughts on how to complete thid u[grade?

I diid add the old-release URLs to /etc/apt/sources.list That seemed to get the upgrade to go further, but not all the way.

but...
with the 2 steps Upgrade will take you more download time than downloading the last CD.
If you can, download the last CD.

The repos are working, i have a server running on 7.04, and 6 series are working too.

The reason that you are experiencing difficulties with upgrading from 7.04 is that 7.04 ceased to be supported in October last year and the relevant files have been archived.

7.04 support ended Oct 2008.
7.10 support will end in April 2009
8.04 LTS support will end in April 2011
8.10 support will end in April 2010

The choice is yours.

Since you only just recently installed Ubuntu 7.04, I suggest that you obtain a more recent version and do a clean install. A clean install is preferred over multiple version upgrades to avoid errors. You can back up your current Home directory onto a USB stick.

Also in 8.10 when you get to the Partitioning section choose "Manual Partitioning" rather than "Guided" or automatic and then make sure you untick a box for each partition that says "Format Partition?". This might mean you keep all your settings and data intact, if it works.

I have tried it a couple of times but you really have to dig around to make sure. I tend to backup the /home folder anyway as it hasnt worked quite a few times!

Good luck and regards from
