installation of ubuntu didn't work

Asked by chris.pratt

tried everything, i got rid of the quiet splash and it showed that everything was "ok" and was good to go, and then i added on everything that you gave me, all like 7 of them, the" noacpi noolapic..... nothing worked. i still get the same screen and i can't get to the desktop,
i have the ubuntu 8.10 desktop edtion, my friend has it on his, and it is totally sweet, i just don't know what to do when this kinda screen comes up
"to access official ubuntu documention, please visit:http://help.ubuntu.com/
to run a comman as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
see "man sudo_root" for details.
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ _ "
this is what i always get no matter what option of configuration i tried,, is there a step by step process that you can tell me that can help me..... i usually just put in the cd and say to run as demo and then to boot from cd.... then itstores some information and it reboots..... then i make it start from my hard drive and it brings me to the menu where i can choose to install it or run it,... i also tried running it directly from the cd, and it brought me to the same menu... is there really any difference or what exactly should i do, and how do i know which preferences i should use as far as "noacpi... " and the other 6 you gave me when i change the command code for booting up ubuntu in the menu....
sorry for being so complicated and long, but i am so lost and i can't find info anywhere

Hello chris.pratt.

I would like to see some information about your machine so we'll be able to diagnose the problem and maybe fix it.

What is the anufacturer and model?

What processor does it have?

How much memory?

What is the name if the image file that you've downloaded to burn the CD?

What happens when you try to boot the live cd normally?

Hi, sorry no response for so long.

Perhaps this might help ...

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Also it might be worth trying a tiny distro such as Wolvix and see how you get on with that instead. I found this one very helpful when i first started learning how to install linux
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
It's tiny and run well from Cd in LiveCd mode

Please let us know how you get on with this. A triple boot with this taking up a !Gb partition at the end of the drive might be interesting. Note there is a package called Gparted in system tools in Wolvix that can help you with partitioning in advance of installing an OS

As i said, please let us know how you are getting on.
Regards from
Tom :)
