mouse is an x on startup

Asked by knd775

I just uninstalled hardy with wubi. I reinstalled it, but on my first start-up, my pointer is stuck as an x and the shell doesn't load (just the background loads [I can't even get to login screen]) I know that this isn't a lot of info, but i can give anything needed! Thanks for your help!!

Time for...
FORMAT C:

on this Windows, or you can try, uninstall hardy with wubi, use this Free Defrag/Cleaner/etcetc for Windows:

http://www.emro.nl/freeware/JkDefragGUI102.zip

and reinstall hardy with wubi, think seriously to install Ubuntu on bare metal, not like a program inside Windows.

Ummm, there's a handy page here that might help :)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
This gives much the best way to have Ubuntu on you system. I think you can get your files and things from the Wubi install onto the proper Ubuntu install once you've booted into the Wubi for a last look around.

The pointer as a blobby X is something to do with the basic "X-server" which is the basic desktop environment. Sadly i can't remember how to fix it but the proper dual boot setup should be free of that problem :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom

If you did follow juancarlospaco's advice and need to recover data then it might still be possible using Gpart (not gparted) from a LiveCd distro which includes it as standard. I haven't hunted around for one yet but DistroWatch is a good place for comparing different distro's here's their main page. I usually like Wolvix although it's 95 on the list but i can't remember it having Gpart on its LiveCd

Good luck with this and many apologies if you took the "advice" offered 9hrs ago.
Many regards from
Tom :)
