Dual Boot - Installing Ubuntu 8.04 LTS & Windows XP SP3

Asked by Oliver Casasola

Hi,

I would like to have support on how can I install Ubuntu on windows XP, using the dual boot option. My configuration is the following:

- WXP + SP3 on a HD of 320GBs
-- Resize the HD and set a partition for Ubuntu for 50GBs
Equals: 320GBs - 50GBs = 270GBs Available for WXP & 50GBs for Ubuntu

Now, how can I install Ubuntu on the second partition without loosing my main WXP installation? Can somebody help me and tell me "step by step" how can I install the second OS (Ubuntu) and give me some or few tips on what I have to do?

I found a lot of information and also tryed to do it, but on the partition manager from the installer of ubuntu, I had no clear idea on how to setup the new partition without loosing the another one.

Thank you!

You will find that when it comes to hard drive space that a different version of mathematics is used for calculating available space. I would set Ubuntu to 50 or 60 GB and let XP have whatever remains. This will be less than 270 GB.

You can also install Ubuntu on XP using Wubi.

Here are some URLs that will tell you more:

The Wubi looks easier but its nothing like as good and ends up being really difficult whereas the 2 links

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/dualboot

give a much better result and are easier to get rid of if you decide you don't like it.

Good luck with this

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.
