First time booting problem.

Asked by aryk

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 on Windows XP.

When I first install Ubuntu, it gets past the boot screen where it shows the logo and loading bar. Then it gos to a screen where it says I have to type in commands. It says to type help for a full list of commands. Then it just shows a bunch of numbers and stuff.

Any help?

I was also wondering if I absolutely need to reformat my hard drive to install Ubuntu?

- Minimum system requirements to install Ubuntu 8.10 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

then

Please be sure your RAM memory is good:

To test your pc RAM memory chips:

- boot your pc press ESC when you see the GRUB row and jump to step "**"

or

- boot from Ubuntu live cd main menu and at first showed menu and

**) select the item "Memory test" to test your pc ram memory

Please run memory test for many hours or stop it and replace your memory chip if you get errors (the errors usually are rows in red colour)

If you have more than one memory chips plugged on your motherboard, to know which is the damaged
chip please run the memory test with only one chip plugged a time.

Hope this helps

I've already checked for the minimum requirements and my PC meets all of them.

i'm having a little trouble understanding. did the installation of ubuntu complete, and then during the first boot it stalls? or are you unable to complete the install?

also what does the screen say exactly when you see the screen where you have to type commands in? is it a grub menu? a bash terminal?

Hi :)

Just wondering if you installed Ubuntu inside Windows or did you follow this type of thing ...

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

This would produce a better install of Ubuntu and then would help us fix the Wubi wobbly one.

Regards from
Tom :)

No, the installation didn't complete, I put the disc in, it went to the language selection, then the installation options. I had to type "noapic" so it would get past some problem. But that didn't work, it just showed numbers that were counting up and saying " something complete" every 10 or so lines. This goes on forever.

There's nothing wrong with the CD because I tried installing it on a old computer and it worked fine.

I didn't try dual booting, but maybe I will.

I'm just going to stop trying, I've installed it on another computer and that's alright for me.
