8.1 installer ignores WinXP & Slackware partitions

Asked by Eric Lee Elliott

Intent is to install Ubuntu in place of Slackware without disturbing WinXP. Problem is Ubuntu installer shows HDD lacks WinXP, Slackware / & swap partitions. HDD has Lilo, boots WinXP & Slackware 12.2. Gparted shows empty HDD while running live CD. Failure to find existing partitions is same from live desktop install or CD install. Before third Ubu install attempt, WXP formatted Slackware partition as fat32, 512 byte blocks, was very slow doing format. Next install attempt, Ubu 8.1 insisted drive is still empty, just 120 GB without partition. Install from desktop of Live CD or install from CD boot, gets same empty HDD error.
Hardware is old Gateway lappy, 120 GB EIDE, 4 GB DRAM, 2 GHz Athlon 64. Using 64 bit Ubu.

Only new item to me is use of Lilo. Previous installs of Ubu 6, 7 & 8 used Grub.
Would do another full HDD install of Ubu, without M$ but I use Delorme Street Atlas & tether a Blackberry for Internet access.

I have no clue how to persue problem.

Installation is done, Ubuntu with WinXP, by complete install to empty HDD. Disk utilities from various sources showed errors in MBR, over lapped partitions & empty cylinders of HDD. Disk utilities could not fix errors found. Cause of disk errors not known but fixed with new partitions & new O. S.s installed.
Cause seems due to Lilo or Slackware.
