Won't start on 2.6.27-11-generic kernel after an error while performing update

Asked by michael.frog

I've got this problem:
tried to perform a software update with synaptic, and the indicator bar stopped for a while, and recovered after 2 minutes. Later on, while trying to install a package from terminal, I've realized that i hadn't enough space on disk (I guess that's why indicator bar freezed for a couple of moments), so I deleted some movies from my desktop. When I rebooted my PC, I've got this error:

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
 - Boot args (at /proc/cmdline)
    - Check rootdelay = (did the system wait long enough?)
    - Check root = (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/BA046C9D046C5E7F does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-1ubuntu6) built-in shell(ash)

Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands
(initramfs)

What should I do?
Now, when i start my PC I have to enter into boot menu and choose 2.6.27-9-generic kernel - with this option PC starts. How can I fix this error so that my system works on 2.6.27-11-generic kernel ?

Many thanks!

Hi

When you're booting up do you get all the way to a desktop?

If not but you get to the menu that allows you to choose a "Recovery Mode" try that out. It's not like Windows recovery, it actually has some helpful things in there. You have to read the options fairly quickly or it will default back into a normal bootup

Good luck and regards from
Tom

when i'm booting up, i get to a desktop only if i press esc key to enter boot menu and choose to boot 2.6.27-9-generic kernel. If I press no key, it default loads 2.6.27-11-generic kernel and I get the error, and I have to restart.

PS - I have a dual-boot with WinXP and Ubuntu 8.10 installed via Wubi

Please boot using the 2.6.27-9-generic and try to reinstall the linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo dpkg --configure --pending
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install linux-image-2.6.27.11

Hope this helps

Unfortunately the solution macrobra recommended dose not resolve the problem on my system. Unlike micheal.frog I didn't recognise a strange behaviour during the update process. I have enough free disk space (~8Gib, I guess that's enough) and kernel 2.6.27-9 works like a charm.

Any other suggestions welcome :)
Thanks,
Josef

I have the same problem. The update went smoothly. It told me I had to reboot. I put off the reboot for a couple of hours because I was in the middle of things. I have 42 GB of space still available on my disk. The machine (a notebook) is running a 2 GHz AMD Turion X2 with an ATI Radeon display card and an Atheros wifi card. 2.6.27-9 works just fine, but 2.6.27-11 does not complete booting. The kernel.log seems to indicate that the problem might be with the FGLRX (it says "fglrx: disagrees about version of symbol struct_module"), but I don't know what to do about it.

Hi. The same problem too. I also have graphic card from ATI (HD3200). I didn't installed it from repository but I downloaded if from ATI website and installed manually(recent version: 8.56.4). While 2.6.27-9-generic works well, the 2.6.27-11-generic will fail to show graphics on GDM although I can hear a sound of that drums and even if I enter my login and pasword I can hear the login sound. But there is no change on screen(still just warped ubuntu logo). After attempt to restart Xserver by ctrl+alt+backspace my computer reboots.
