System beep + Headphones = HEARING DAMAGE!

Asked by jonibologni

I'm a long time musician and have used Linux for 4 years... Make sure you disable the annoying system beep before using a decent pair of headphones with an Ubuntu machine. Regardless of your volume settings, the beep will be VERY VERY LOUD. I clicked a few times too many, caught about five beeps before I could throw the phones off, and my ears have been ringing hard for two days. I've scheduled an appointment to get them checked out. Seriously, be careful!

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs. You might also find some help in the Community help forums: http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/webforums. The question, as it appears from your description, would be "Is there a way to turn off the system beep?"

If you search in ubuntuforums.org, you may find several ways to disconnect the system beep.

I'll drop here a couple of them I selected from the ones I saw:

1) To turn it off permanently (at least until you undo this change):

Add the following line:

blacklist pcspkr

to your file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

2) To turn it off just when you need it (it won't take effect next time you reboot):

Open a terminal and type there the following two lines:

xset b off
xset b 0 0 0

Hope this helps, and also that you feel soon your ears health improving again.
