Asked by nlbing91 on 2009-01-28

I just installed ubuntu 8.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1501 which previously had vista on it. Before ubuntu i was able to connect wirelessly to my router. Now that I've got ubuntu i cannot connect. So my question is what do i have to do to connect wirelessly to the internet??????

nlbing91,

Ok..connect to the router by wire cat 5 and follow this your driver might be already set just need to enable..

Goto the top task bar see System click on it. Highlight Administration>Hardware Drivers
type in the password. A box will open enable only if connected to the router by wire..
cause it searchs the net in a special location for drivers...

if enabled. and still no luck then type in a terminal lspci |grep "Wireless" and paste results..

Hi,

Please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (type each then hit <enter>)

sudo iwlist scanning
nm-tool
iwconfig
ifconfig
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound
dmesg | grep illswitch

Step 3: Post results (cut/paste terminal output from each command) here

Regards,

Mark

hello nlbing91,

it looks like your wifi adaptor is supported in the linux kernel, is autodetected, and is currently using the driver=b43-pci-bridge module=ssb. Does the light on your laptop come on to show the wifi is working? are you able to SEE networks but just not connect to?

nlbing91 (nlbing91) said : #6

No the wifi light is not lite up and i cannot see any of the networks. And when i try to add my network it still does not connect.

your wifi interface -- Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev
01) -- is similar with the one shown on

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/58872

it appears that there is a problem in 810 with this chipset; just take a look at

Hi,

Your wireless issue is identical to this one:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/56393

I think you are experiencing this bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/197819

Please try this workaround solution:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/b43-fwcutter/+bug/197819/comments/58

b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to install it.

The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.

Regards,

Mark

try this while it is installed
and while connected to the net...type this

sudo /usr/share/b43-fwcutter/install_bcm43xx_firmware.sh

or

remove the b43-fwcutter and reinstall it..

open a terminal and do

sudo apt-get --purge remove b43-fwcutter

the firmware isn't installed.....

not make sure your connected to the net

install it

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

make sure your connected see it get the driver from

for the script sudo /usr/share/b43-fwcutter/install_bcm43xx_firmware.sh

cd to it..

type cd /usr/share/b43-fwcutter
then type ./install_bcm43xx_firmware.sh

Thank you all for helping i finally got it to work. I simply reinstalled Ubuntu. Next updated it from the update manager under the system tab. Restarted my computer then I was able to finally see my wireless networks then I simply connected.
