Kubuntu Fails to Login Despite Accepting Password

ok i have linux ubuntu server 7.10 it will not let me put a password in how can i fix it i made one and it wont let me put it in at all

Hey Trip!

try doing CTRL - ALT - F1 to enter a console, maybe press enter to clear a line, then try to log in...

if it allows you to login there then something is up with login manager...

also, if normal login fails, try logging into console as root

I mean, yeah, I can login through the console, but any attempt to start the GUI fails. That's how I did what I've done so far.

I'm using KDE.

Would reinstalling KDE lose my settings?

erm, a simple

sudo apt-get remove kde

sudo apt-get install kde

should not make you lose your settings, though you may want to do all this from a console

Trying to remove kde asked me to remove a bunch of nonessential packages that I just installed.

Trying to remove kdm asked me to remove kubuntu-desktop, kdm, and a few other packages, but not KDE as a whole. Do you suppose this might correct it?

Never mind, reinstalling kdm did NOT help.

Apparently, X fails to start if your hard drive is full. I don't see why it wouldn't let me know instead of having me panic over it for three hours, but...

What its default login and password? becouse i install kubuntu but kubuntu ask me login and password i download me kubuntu in internet install and i dont know what its is login and password;/ PLX help me <email address hidden> Thx
