1) you could try ubuntu 8.10 as it has better support for wifi cards
2) you could give us more info on your wifi adaptor with the terminal command:
lshw -C network

Hi,
OK, that is clear.
Please first install Ubuntu 8.10 using the Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD. It will safely overwrite the old Ubuntu 8.04 system files.
After installing Ubuntu 8.10, I think your kernel version will be 2.6.27.7
Because I think you will be using Linux kernel version 2.6.27.7, choose one of the following wireless kernel module packages:
http://
http://
Open a Terminal and then enter the following commands to install the driver package:
wget http://
sudo dpkg -i linux-rtl8187se
These kernel module version 2.6.27.7 packages worked in
https:/
Be careful when choosing the right module version: The Linux kernel version and Realtek driver version have to be the same.
Please look at
http://
for more info about the newest Realtek drivers.
Hope this is clear,
Regards,
Mark

i had to re-install ubuntu from the start because i messed up boot loader when i tried to arragne the boot order, and now that i have followed again the same procedure for the WiFi as before, i only see the "Auto eth0" in the Network area, and when i right click on the network icon i only see "Enable Networking" and it is checked... no Wireless there...

Hi,
OK, that means you upgraded your Linux kernel from 2.6.27.7 to 2.6.27.9, which means you cannot use the drivers anymore that I provided earlier on.
As I wrote earlier on: "Be careful when choosing the right module version: The Linux kernel version and Realtek driver version have to be the same."
Because you are now using Linux kernel version 2.6.27.9, you need to try the following wireless kernel module package:
http://
Open a Terminal and then enter the following commands to uninstall the old, incorrect driver package and to install the new driver package:
sudo dpkg -r linux-rtl8187se
wget http://
sudo dpkg -i linux-rtl8187se
I hope this is clear for you,
Regards,
Mark

writing the first command two times, both ways, i get the following...
dodo@mini:~$ sudo dpkg -r linux-rtl8187se
dpkg: you must specify packages by their own names, not by quoting the names of the files they come in
Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Type dpkg --license for copyright license and lack of warranty (GNU GPL) [*].
Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or `more' !

Hi,
That might be my mistake. Please skip the line
sudo dpkg -r linux-rtl8187se
and continue with
wget http://
sudo dpkg -i linux-rtl8187se
Then reboot and retest your wireless.
Regards,
Mark
