NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M driver for ubuntu 8.04

Asked by Keshava Ram

I am using HP Pavilion dv6602AU Notebook (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01185337&cc=in&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_INEN).

I installed latest ubuntu linux i.e. 8.04 Hardy Heron (64 bit). But display resolution is very low. After testing the hardwares I found that the Display driver is not available.

My Graphics Card is NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M. nvidia site says that the support is available http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/169.12/README/appendix-a.html
But I am unable to find and download the exact driver.

Please help me in getting the display driver.

PS - My wireless internet connection is also not working in ubuntu. So, I will have to download it in windows and install it from linux.

Give ubuntu 8.10 a try, it has better wifi drivers, especially after you enable the intrepid-backports. then you can install the latest video driver.

Thanks for the responses. I did try 8.10 and the situation has improved a lot!

This time the nVidia drivers for both wifi and display have been detected but they weren't pre-installed because it wasn't exactly free software or source code was not available. I manually enabled the wifi driver successfully. I couldn't enable the display driver because it needed a download and my internet is still not working.

So, I think if I can get my wireless internet working, most of the problems can be solved. I can't wait to use linux fulltime.

Sounds like posting another couple of questions about those issues might be good.

Good luck
Tom :)
