Unsuccessful Ubuntu v 8.10 Installation

Am running Celeron processor w/512MB RAM. New build computer system w/no os. I have tried several times to install this with varying, but incomplete, results. I am using CD burned from d/l from mirror site Gigenet in USA. The furthest I have gotten until it hangs in limbo is at the installation screen after asking the first of seven steps, Install>Install>Languaage used for the installation. The cursor shows the spinning circle but after several hours it is still there. I first tried to install using an Ubuntu 7.04 Installation Disc. It too failed in a similar manner. HELP!!

if the regular installer fails you can try the alternate text based installer:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate

but since you have such low system specs, you may want to use Xubuntu instead:

http://www.xubuntu.org/get#intrepid
