how do it put ubuntu oper sys on to a flash drive that is bootable

boot off an Ubuntu LiveCD then go to System → Administration → Create a USB Startup Disk.

if you dont have a blank CD to make an Ubuntu LiveCD, you can make a bootable usb thumbdrive directly with unetbootin but its not a persistent ubuntu installation. any changes you make are lost each time you boot.
