Uninstall Ubuntu

Asked by Manny J Perez

I install Ubuntu one night and I was impressed by it. Shut the computer off and went to bed. The following morning when I turned my computer on and it asked me if I wanted o run Windows XP or Ubuntu, I click Ubuntu. From there on my system went blank, then only showed half of the Ubuntu page and it froze. I had to turn it off manually.

I tried to ruh it several times and it kept on freezing on me. I uninstalled it and it still asks me if I want to run Windows XP or Ubuntu.

How do I get rid of that window and just let my system open as before just Windows?

Thank you, Please answer at my e-mail address since I have this thing about using Ubuntu.

I followed your advice and install Ubuntu. I LOVED IT, I played with it several hours one night. Shut the system off and went to sleep.

The following day started my system and clicked on Ubuntu, not only that page did not opened completely but froze my computer to the point that I had to turn it off manually. I tried again and the same thing happened. It broke my heart but I uninstalled it except that now every time that I start my system the logon keeps on asking me whether I want Windows XP or Ubuntu?

How do I uninstall that opening screen? I have add/remove, used revo and even checked the registry and Ubuntu is not there only when I start up my system.

Please help me take Ubuntu from that screen (is driving me loco) or tell me how to reinstall it without loosing my Xp or my Firefox.

Thank you,
Please responde at <email address hidden> since I have this thing about getting on the Ubuntu web page.

boot from the windows CD, enter the recovery console (press R when it asks you whether you want to install windows etc.) When you're at the console, type:

fixmbr

that will remove grub boot menu

I had almost the exact same problem. I re-installed Ubuntu using the OEM option. Haven't had any issue since. Only difference- I didn't try to keep windows.

Trying Ubuntu within Windows almost cripples Ubuntu. For a much better install try this, its a bit more technical but more worthwhile:-

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

This way does rather commit you to keeping Ubuntu on your system as a choice that you don't have to boot into but can if you want.

I'm glad to see you were on Xp rather than Vista as that gives another and possibly easier answer. Also Xp and Ubuntu work well together on a proper dual-boot system.

Ok, the easier answer with Xp or earlier is to find Config.sys and oen it with a text editor (like notepad) then delete out the big chunk of stuff that looks like the menu. there's usually at least a one line gap before the menu, everything before the gap is important to keep. Config.sys is a system file so make sure you save it as a different name before you mess about with it so that you can recover it afterwards if it goes wrong. the Config.sys file is usually on the root of your C: drive
C:/config.sys
Being a system file it tries to protect itself from being messed with but you can easily get around that by booting off a Live Cd and then look for the file in
/dev/sda/config.sys
i use Gedit at this point, its very similar to Notepad.

Ok, so there we go. All back to front so that you know to take care
Good luck and have fun
