Having trouble setting up wireless with built in card for new to ubuntu user

Asked by Wilson

So i have just purchased a netbook and decided that i wanted to put ubuntu 8.10 on it. so far its been a big change for me, i am familiar with windows and a little mac but nothing with linux. i have messed around and managed to get the drivers for my wireless card installed but now i have been trying to get my card visible to my computer and assign a logical name to it and then figure out how to search for wireless connections and then how to connect to them with and without WEP security and a very basic how to for wireless. i barely understand the concept of sudo and install and all that code so please make it baby like for me if you respond to this. so PLEASE HELP, i dont want to be turned down towards ubuntu just after a few days!

I might be able to help check something for me..Connect to the router by cable cat 5, and check to see if it is enabled.
go to the top menu.
System>Administration>Hardware Drivers>
you will get prompted for a password it is the root password you picked during install. also it is a sudo password.
if it is there check enable.
if it isn't enabled make sure your online once you enable it it will turn to the net or use the install drivers, but if it needs firmware please make sure you are connect to the net it will install it for you.

yeah its enabled, i had to use the install windows driver program to install drivers to see my card, its a AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter or also known as a ar5007eg driver card. i have tried and failed doing a tutorial with ndiswrapper and tried modifying stuff and been unsuccessful. but my drivers are installed and there is no logical name. so when everyone talks about wifi0 or wlan0 my doesnt have that label even yet. i need to code it in. and have had no luck with it.

Digg
Atheros sometime the generic drivers fail. This might help http://unsharptech.com/2008/10/31/atheros-wireless-in-ubuntu-810-intrepid-ibex/ or i can try to walk you through it.

no I wouldn't do that, it shouldn't be necessary.

yes there is the network manager applet, and if you dont like that you can try wicd.

http://wicd.sourceforge.net/

in the network manager app. it shows wired network: auto eth0 and then in wireless: device is unmanaged

what does that mean?

sorry you misunderstood. there if a file called /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf you need to edit it and change the value inside of it from managed=false to managed=true.

sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
