ubuntu wont boot after windows install

Asked by Darkstalker

I was trying to install windows Xp on a external HDD and installed it on my laptop by accident. I deleted The windows partition and ubuntu wont boot now. I tried fixing with the LiveCD. I opened terminal started Grub as root

<sudo grub>

then i got this:

< [ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For
         the first word, TAB lists possible command
         completions. Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
         completions of a device/filename. ]

grub>

then i continued by typing:

<find /boot/grub/stage1>

it didn't work so then i tried:

"find /grub/stage1"

and it still didn't work. then i tried entering:

grub> root (hd0,1)

grub> setup (hd0)

and what i got was

"checking if " /boot/grub/stage1" exist... no
checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no

i dont know what to do any more other than doing a fresh install of ubuntu, but that means reformatting the HDD which i dont want to do.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

are you going to install windows again? you probably want to do that before fixing grub. you'll just have to do it again afterwards anyways :)

check out the super grub disk. it's really useful:
