how do i change a login password when i have know idea what it is

i removed your question from the firefox package as it is not related to firefox. If i understand you correctly, you want to change a user's login password into ubuntu correct? then from a terminal type:

sudo passwd userid

where the userid is the username of the password you'd like to change. you will need to know the superuser (root) password to make the change.
