ubuntu 8.04.1 and 8.10 not loading

Asked by shockrocker

I've tried running bot 8.04.1 and 8.10 64 bit (yes my computer can use 64bit) and it gets to the busybox and initramfs screen. after that, it just sits there. I am still kinda new to ubuntu so I have no clue what to do. I did have ubuntu on my old computer and it worked fantastically. I just recently built my own gaming computer, but for my none-gaming tasks, I wanted to use ubuntu. On my last computer I had windows xp and ubuntu running great, but now it only runs windows, and like I said, ubuntu fails to load.

My comp specs are :

Wait thats wrong, the motherboard is an XFX Nvidia Geforce 8200, and the graphics card is a XFX Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT, which for the graphics card, is much differant then the stand Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT.

hello shockrocker,

according to the XFX your motherboard has a built in video adaptor:

http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/products/motherboards/GeForceseries/GeForce%208200.aspx#2

please try removing your XFX nvidia 8500 daughterboard and installing ubuntu with the onboard graphics. Alternatively, try disabling the onboard graphics and just using your 8500GT.

in the bios see if there are some switches you can change from RAID to SCSI or SATA or enable/disable ACHI.

I wouldn't know how to go about disabling the onboard

check the manual. if you dont have it laying around, i'm sure there is a copy on the manufacturer's website. there may be a jumper on the motherboard to disable the onboard video, or most likely you can toggle it off in the bios. (the manual will tell you how to enter the bios too)

alls I could do was set it to load the PCI-E VGA first or the PCI VGA or the onboard, and so I set it to PCI-E VGA.

this is the screen that comes up though :

Busybox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)

Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands

(initramfs)

What am I supposed to do? Was there something I missed during installation? or after? cuz last time I had my brother set it up, and I just installed it straight from the website. idk if I have to do anything after that.

your trying to boot off the liveCD right? you should be able to select 'test ubuntu and do not make any changes on my hard disk"

if not then you need to adjust some settings in the computer's bios. I know that the bios looks pretty complicated, but it is broken down to different sections like standard settings, advanced, onboard periphials, etc. just go through them one at a time and see which options you can adjust for the video adaptor and hard disk controllers.

every motherboard is different i'm not going to be able to tell you exactly what to change so you'll have to experiment a little. unless of course the motherboard manufacturer XFX can give you some tips about? maybe they have a message forum too?

me had a same issue on an gaming pc of a friend, what we did was first reducing the ram to 2Gig, it then did run fine (it accepted the further ram after installation). Are there any other messages printed (that include error logs) before u are dumped to the busybox shell?

WOW your all nubs. How did you not know my graphics card isn't even supported by linux? The problem was I'd have to some how install it, then download the linux drivers for any Nvidia 8 series graphics card. It took me some looking but ya. thats the problem. your all telling me to trying using my onboard which is an 8 series graphics card too!
