Can't use X

Asked by ***mike420***

I have had Ubuntu for a little over a month and i enjoy what i have saw so far. For some reason though, I cant seem to get the X display working. I have put *almost* too many hours into trying to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Could you post some of the error messages you have encountered while trying to run X, and some general information about your video card and display would be cool.

I recieve a message saying that it can't connect to the X server. I am using a Trio S3 64 video card and an AcerView-11D display. I can't see it being a hardware problem as much as a software problem. If anyone has had this problem can you PLEASE give me suggestions as to how you fixed it.

Have you tried these solutions from the wiki?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FixVideoResolutionHowto

I may be way off with that diagnosis. If you're starting X from the command line try adding "> ~/Xerrorlog.txt" to the end of the startx command and post the contents of the file ~/Xerrorlog.txt on this page so we can see what errors are happening.

Have you changed your window manager or modified the standard ubuntu installation?

You can also try to look for error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
try to fix yourself or come back with extracts from this file

Can you help with this problem?
