maybe bug of Desktop Effects?

Asked by chunchengch

In order to use Desktop Effects normally, I have re-installed Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) for three times, although I had tried many ways to solved problems such as modified files sources.list and gdm.conf-custom etc. according to the article "XGL/Compiz Nvidia 32bit" (knowledge 76), such as installed Beryl Manager, but the fact is everything gets worst.

Finally, I discover one thing and I suppose it may be a bug, after I newly install Feisty, if I activate the Desktop Effects, I must not change the setting any more, otherwise the cube effect will no more appear and the applet "Switch between workspaces" remains only one workspace. however, because I am just a linux newbie, I tried Mandriva for about two weeks and then switched to Ubuntu for just four days, I am not pretty sure all what happened?!

When I installed Feisty the first time, the beautiful startup music came out from my laptop, you know, I was so exciting, because Mandriva played no sound, although it offers a excellent 3D desktop effect "Metisse", I preferred a "phonic" linux environment to begin my learning, while I am still keen to use Beryl and Compiz to fulfill my Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, so, looking forward to the update of this problem. thanks!

Thanks for your question, to solve it you open a 3d effects gui manager, disable the cube rotation option, esc. Change the n° of workspaces, to do it click with right button on the icon near the trash, you choose preferences and after increase the n° of workspace from 2 to 4. Open the 3d-manager-tool and enabled the cube option, after try to rotate this.

thanks

I had tried it before, and the cube effect appeared no more, even though I went back to the Desktop Effects manager to enable cube option, eventually I had no choice but to re-installed Feisty.

you can do follow this instruction:
    Alt+F2
    type 'gconf-editor' into text box
    then, click on 'Run' button
    apps/compiz/general/screen0/options
    set 'hsize' value change to 4
close 'Configuration Editor'

Try the following steps, at least it helps me solve the problem.

Turn off the Workspaces on a cube
=====================
1. System -> Preferences -> Desktop Effect
2. untick "Workspaces on a cube" option
3. Close it.

Modify Setting for Workspace Switcher
=======================
1. Right-click the bottom right "workspace" -> Preferences
2. Under "Switcher", Select "Show only the current workspace"
3. Under "Workspaces", change "number of workspaces" to 4
4. Close it

Turn on Workspaces on a Cube again
======================
1. System -> Preferences -> Desktop Effect
2. tick "Workspaces on a cube"
3. Done

Can you help with this problem?
