Admin password help

Asked by Wanbli

I have just installed Ubuntu and I know NOTHING! I want to share a USB drive on my network, but it says I have to enter some statement as an adminitrator. I tried loggng in as an administrator, but it won't accept my password and I don't know what the password is as it didn't request it on install. Can anyone please help?

You must use the sudo command to share some administrative tasks and when ask for a password give yours, not the root password.

Wanbli, you should read carefully this article: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo
This will explain how to have administrator access to your machine when using ubuntu.

This was my primary concern about using this OS, one needs to be a linux expert to be able to use basic functions, like sharing. I know windows inside and out, but it has taken 20+ years to get there and I no longer have the time to learn the inside of linux (Ubuntu). The sign of an excellent OS is that it is transparent to the user, this OS is not. I guess this is what you get for "free".

I'm very disapointed.

I still need to understand how to fix my problems, right now sharing is primary. The system will allow me to share folders that are "inside" the machine, but folders and drives that are "outside (USB Drives) it won't. When I try to access internally shared folders or drives, it won't allow access, even though I provide the appropriate password (my username and pasword that I set up when I loaded the system). I can see the drives and the folders, but I cannot access them. With the USB drives, I can't share them, so I can't see them from another machine either. If I can't fix this I will be forced back to Vista because I travel and require the ability to have access to my files on these USB drives.

Well, well,

If you want to share anything (a folder or a whole drive) to a windows network you must go to System->Administration->Samba.
You'll be asked for an administrative password (it's your password what you must enter, the one you used to log in ) and then a window will be opened and you can add as many drives as you want (be aware to mark the check boxes to make it Visible and give the access rights do you want).
If you want to share folders (inside a unit), you can do that by right clicking over any folder and selecting "Sharing Options" on the pop up menu and remember "if you are asked for an administrative password, enter your password (the one you used to login)".
Hope this helps, let me know.

Thank you, that's the answer I was looking for. I have the "folder" sharing down, it's the USB drive that was killing me!

Thanks again!

Ok, false alarm! System->Administration->Samba is not a menu string in my pc's. I have System->Administration, but no Samba. Any ideas?

Ok,
Please go to Applications->Add/Remove...
In the search box type samba, and install it by checking the check box at the left of the name and clicking the Apply button.
Hope this helps, let me know.
