Router and Ubuntu aren't harmonious.

Asked by cattlesnake

Hello.

I have a Gateway m-1617 that came with Windows Vista 64amd. Once that crashed, I replaced it entirely with Ubuntu 8.10. My problem lies with it's refusal to communicate with a Linksys Wireless-G (WRT54G v2).

I have tried numerous tutorials and none I have found on these (or any other) forums has seemed to have done the trick. The suggestion across the board is to install the 32bit version of Ubuntu, but that'd be counter-intuitive to why I use my laptop. It'd be a pity to me to revert back to Vista, but after 4 hours of failed attempts with ndiswrapper, I'm feeling little choice.

The closest I came to getting a Windows Network Driver said I had a valid driver but no hardware present.

Please keep in mind as you reply to me that though I'm quickly learning the basics of terminal, the most recent programming I've done was drawing a circle in QBasic and that's the extent of my savvy.

Thanks,
~CS

hello.

the problems you had with ndiswrapper is that it does not yet support vista drivers; so we'll try xp x64 drivers if available for your interface or, even better, the drivers may already be there but not active/configured; but before anything pls run in a terminal commands as follows

uname -a

lspci

lsusb

ifconfig

iwconfig

and post (copy/paste) their output here; we'll continue after that.

cattlesnake, just checking further, your router .....'Linksys Wireless-G (WRT54G v2).'..... version 2 it is at appears to be quite old; I could see that there are updates available (v7.0.4 ?)

so pls provide us the output requested AND in the meantime update/upgrade your router software to the latest ver available.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your quick reply. My laptop isn't connecting to the internet and typing this output would be a painstaking process. Is there anything specifically that I could look for and type the results of here that would be of help?

Thanks,
CS

can't you just use a wired connection to go to the net ? doesn't your laptop have a wired conn'n (RJ45) ? how do you communicate with me over internet ? using another pc ? if so just carry out commands above, save them to a file on a usb stick and paste them so I can see them.

btw, pls carry out

lapci -nn

command. the output to all above cmds is mandatory to assist you.

you could copy/paste the output to a text file and then use a usb thumbdrive or external usb hard disk to copy the textfile over to the working computer.

please give us the output of the command:

lshw -C network
