Desktop Install, Boot Problems.

Asked by cantar

"ubuntu-8.10-desktop-amd64" to let you know what am working with. After the install goes though from desktop install i then reboot select Ubuntu OS and it says it cant find W:\ubuntu\winboot\wubildr (think that was the right file name) well so i decided to boot back into windows vista (note both OS are on different Hard drives) and went to W:\ubuntu\winboot\ and i saw that file located in there. my question is why isnt it booting up then?

i see you are using wubi. that installs ubuntu on windows' ntfs partition. it does not install ubuntu to its own partition. I recommend trying to install wubu on the C drive instead. see if that resolves your issue.

alternatively if you want to install ubuntu normally (without using wubi) you can boot off the liveCD and install it to its own drive or partition. (if you dont have any empty disk space you can shrink an NTFS or FAT32 partition to make room for a new one)

Heres what i did I have my Media drive e:/ 500 gig hd well i shrunk it by 50 gigs (more then enough room) i then formated the partition (could only chose NTFS am guessing because the other partion is set to NTFS and Primary partition There is a swap file on it if it would help i could disable it) but then i have my C:/ partition (main HD) and a Q:/ partition witch is also on the Main HD but its my Windows Vista install files (needed since this is a dell) anyways i have to install via windows atm am out of blank disks and am using demon tools to emulate a cdrom mount to install it (witch it says it installs fine) but when the reboot option comes up it gave me that error about not finding a file

hey thats great. if you've already shrunk the drive by 50 gigs then you are set to go! thats the only hard part. the rest is cake!

lets get rid of that wubi install. go to windows, add/remove and uninstall ubuntu. Now boot off the LiveCD (you may need to tell your bios to boot from CD before HD if it doesnt do it automatically)

during the installation when it gets to the part about automatically setting up the drive, change it to MANUAL. find the 50 gigs you left free for ubuntu. set it to mount the partition as root / and formatted as EXT3. now finish the ubuntu install and you should be up and running.

yes its the best way. you need a cdrom or you can install from a usb thumbdrive if you have one of those. you can use the iso image with unetbootin

downloaded and installed wubuntu, selected ubuntu from boot menu (on restart) and got through the initial part of setup ie checking installation, checking partition info, progress meter went to 100% and locked up the keyboard CAPS and SCROLL lock lights started blinking and system hung. did hard reset and it got to 28% and hung; booted back up and managed 14%. XP pro is functioning fine. Had wireless logitech mouse but put std mouse (USB) in on second reboot.
