cannot install ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Gareth Davies

Have been trying for some time to install Ubuntu 8.10 on my Advent Laptop, but have been totally unsuccessful. Have downloaded the files, burnt CD's (several), and even been sent out the official CD, but every time I try to install, I only get so far.

Each time, I get as far as the boot screen with the progress bar. It gets about a quarter of the way across then stops. No CD-ROM or HD activity. There are no error messages or any messages for that matter. Just total inactivity. I have even waited for 15 mins just in case I was being impatient - still nothing.

I am no expert on PC's so any help here would be appreciated. Thanks

You could do an md5 checksum test to see if your live CD is OK. I guess you burned it on the Windows side, so check the corresponding program if there is an option "shoiw md5 checksum". Then compare this with the checksums from your download site (that was probably ubuntu.com/getubuntu).

Did the md5 checksum on the downloaded files and all seemed correct, Even checked the CD posted to me from Canonical. All ok there too. Still won't load. IS there something particular to Vista that I should be doing? Turning off bits etc?

Did you read this?

Btw, talking of bits, do you have a 32 or 64 bit processor? There are different live CDs for each.
