Hard drive chirp

Asked by mark watling

After rebooting following the last update my hard drive started to chirp like a cricket. When I boot into Vista this never happens. I am running Ubuntu 8.10 on a P4- 3.4gh single core, 500gb Seagate HD with a second TB drive for back-ups. I am concerned this is damaging the drive an is detering me from using Ubuntu at the moment.
I have seen this mensioned on a couple forms with no solutions.

Thanks for the help.

please run seatools diagnostics test on your hard disk:

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools

SeaTools for Windows
SeaTools for Windows has replaced SeaTools Online and PowerMax. SeaTools for Windows is a comprehensive, easy-to-use diagnostic tool that helps you quickly determine the condition of the disc drive in your external hard drive, desktop or notebook computer. It includes several tests that will examine the physical media on your Seagate or Maxtor disc drive and any other non-Seagate disc drive.
