no wireless connection Toshiba Satellite A215

Asked by stephencorbo

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7472. I am unable to connect to the internet, no wireless icon appears under the network. I have a dual boot setup and the network is accessible under Vista. I am a first timer to ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, and would like to get this issue resolved.

If anyone can be of assistance,

I would very much appreciate,

Stephen

I have went through all of the trouble shooting and nothing works

i recommend upgrading to 8.10 as it has much better wifi drivers. alternatively if you want to stay with 8.04,
Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

lshw -C network

to let us know which network adaptor you have.

Hi,

Please follow this procedure:

Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications->Accessories->
Terminal"

Step 2: Run the following commands (type each then hit <enter>)

sudo iwlist scanning
nm-tool
iwconfig
ifconfig
sudo lshw -C network
lspci -nn
lsusb
uname -a
dmesg | grep ound

Step 3: Post results (cut/paste terminal output from each command) here

Regards,

Mark

This pc uses

Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5418 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

apparently; same chipset in Lenovo Thinkpad; lspci should clarify this.

intrepid 810 release has the driver included - it should be an automatic configuration at install time.

hardy 804 and 8041 may have madwifi driver included which I doubt; in this case ndiswrapper and xp drivers should be used for x32; for x64 though I'm not sure whether xp has 64 bit driver - it should be checked first.

upgrade to 810 intrepid should be a v good option to consider.

for hardy 804 it would be better to get the svn madwifi package and compile/install according to this url

http://bbechdol.wordpress.com/2008/09/18/installing-madwifi-drivers-for-atheros-ar5418-80211abgn-on-ubuntu-hardy-heron-804/

also according to other users ndiswrapper method works quite well for x32 architecture.
