When Ubuntu is loading (ie. the progress bar is filling up) can you please click Ctrl+Alt+F1.

You you should be able to see some messages, what messages does it display before your computer freezes.

Yeh, i prefer knowing what its doing rather than just watching a progress bar.

This verbose option is great but i really like the distros where the writing goes all the way up one side of the screen. I'm usually clueless about what it means but some of the packages become familiar and once or twice i've been able to fix errors flagged up there by downloading packages things require.

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online after work/school gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.
