My specs:
Computer
HP Compaq d330t (2.4GHz Intel Celeron with 512MB of RAM)
Monitor
     Gateway FPD1715W (17" Widescreen 1280 x 720 )

Ubuntu auto detects the monitor, and the display resolution is great....but the problem I am having is that RED is not being displayed, instead stuff that is supposed to be RED is BLACK, for instance the RED letters in the 'google' title are BLACK. I thought that my monitor was at fault, but if I disconnect the VGA cable, I get a message on the screen that says 'cable disconnected' below it is a RED/GREEN/BLUE box, so I know the monitor displays RED, but why won't it display RED from the computer?

Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Daniel

Other than this problem, Ubuntu has been great, easy to set up wireless, compiz-fusion, themes, and easy to update.

I didn't change the fonts, but I did change the theme. I then cycled through the themes to see if any change would occur with the RED being displayed as BLACK, and no change occurred. I also changed out monitors with my other computer to see if it was my monitor, and it does the same thing with a different monitor, and I also tried a different VGA cable, with no change.

It appears to be either my computers internal hardware, or a setting in Ubuntu. I am using my computers on-board video controller which I think is an Intel 865G.

Would using a 'Video Card' instead of the internal video make a difference?

Normally , that would not matter, you can try doing this :

go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers , add see if you have pending drivers to install , install and restart .

And which Video Card are use using ?

I checked the video drivers, and there weren't any pending drivers to install. I'm not using a video card, I'm using the VGA port on the motherboard for video.
I think the chip on the motherboard that supports video is an Intel 865G.

I haven't got a video card at the moment, that was why I was wondering if a video card would make a difference.

To get your video card brand and model...

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:

lspci

lspci is lower of LSPCI

Thanks for the command, according to the terminal, the on-board video is an 'Intel 82865G'.
I got a hold of HP tech support last night, and they suggested the problem is with the on-board video itself, and if I install an AGP video card, the card will have priority so I can by-pass the on-board video problem.

So far all signs are pointing to a hardware issue and not software, because I booted my machine with a live version of 'Morphix Gamer' and 'Knoppix 5.3', and they too displayed red as black, where as on other machines using the same live cd's the red is ok.

I've found a low-profile AGP video card that will fit my machine, so I am going to give that a try.
I'll post a follow up message as soon as I receive and test the hardware.

Problem solved:
It turns out that my VGA cable was bad, I thought I had tested it by swapping it out, but I confused it with the bad one (I was really frustrated that day).
I got my AGP video card, and everything works great.
I am presuming that it was the RED line of the VGA cable that broke continuity.

Thanks for everyones help and suggestions.
