Ubuntu 8.10 Logitech LX7 Cordless Optical USB Mouse issues with single clicks being double clicks, multiple clicks for action etc.

Asked by James Dimick

I tried searching around through the bugs and questions for Ubuntu but I couldn't seem to find anything related to my particular issue. Sorry if this has been posted before...

I am running Ubuntu 8.10. For quite a while now (ever since I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 I think) I have been having very weird mouse issues. Some times my single-clicks will be recognized as double-clicks. Other times I'll have to click several times before my click is even recognized at all. Some times when I hold down my left mouse button to drag it will stop recognizing it and cut off my drag in the middle of it. When I try to select text on a web page or anywhere it will take me several tries to actually get it highlighted. Also, when I try to right-click it will sometimes just execute an item in the context menu without me even clicking on anything.

I wasn't noticing it very much to begin with (in fact at first I thought it was limited to just Firefox) but then as time went on it seemed to get worse and worse. Now I'm having these issues all the time everywhere in Ubuntu. It's gotten to the point where I'm almost considering going back to Windows because this issue has made Ubuntu pretty unusable for me. My keyboard (and other USB devices) work just fine so I don't believe it is a USB issue. My monitor and graphics card are recognized correctly and they work just fine too so I don't think they are the cause either.

I've been searching for at least a month trying to find a solution to this problem but have thus far not found anything that fixes it. All I know is this just started happening in the last release or two of Ubuntu. I was using this same exact mouse and setup before this problem started and everything worked perfectly back then. My current install of Ubuntu is a fresh one directly from the CD. Not an upgrade.

Has anybody heard of this issue? Is there a fix for it? Anything? I'm getting pretty desperate here. As I said, if I can't resolve this soon I may end up going back to Windows. I love Ubuntu but at least my mouse works and I can get things done in Windows.

Here is some details of my current setup:

Ubuntu 8.10
GNOME 2.24.1 (Ubuntu 2008-10-24)
Kernel 2.6.27-9-generic (#1 SMP Thu Nov 20 21:57:00 UTC 2008)
AMD Athlon Processor
ASUS AN35N Ultra v1.1 Motherboard
2GB RAM
Micro Innovations Internet Keyboard Elite KB565BL (connected via USB)
Logitech LX7 Cordless Optical Mouse (connected via USB)
Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS Graphics Card
Samsung SyncMaster 943BX Monitor (connected via DVI)
Sound Blaster Audigy Sound Card

I can provide any other info needed upon request.

Errr, it sounds a lot like a "waggle the wires" solution might be appropriate here, especially as the problem is increasing. I'd do lots here ...

Unplug it and plug it back into the same place firmly (seems dumb but often works)
If its usb then plug it into a different slot for a while (an occasional vacation helps)
If its got a ball take the ball out and clean the spindles inside with a cotton bud and drop of alcohol (the trick is in not losing the ball!)
If it's optical (a light instead of ball) then clean the lens gently
If it's wireless then replace batteries (if any) & reboot the main unit it points at
Clean the mouse-mat (again) and try a different surface

All those kinds of things seem dumb but however house-proud you are its amazing how these things build up. One thing that gets me is the amount of paper clips that get inside my keyboard and block the keys. The only paper clips i use are to make attachments to emails! I don't see how they get inside my keyboard.

Also go to the System menu on the top taskbar - Preferences - Mouse (an option about halfway down the list) It sounds about time to play around with these options, worth doing every year or so i reckon.

If there's still no improvement try buying a new mouse (the old one will suddenly work again now, you'll see). New mouse at £10 or new operating system at £140, hmmm - tough choice ;)

Good luck and have fun with the mouse, don't forget "The Herbie Affect" - talk nicely to it and make some light threats (just before buying a new mouse is effective)

Tom :)

Hey Tom,
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

Unfortunately I have already tried all of those ideas. I cleaned the lens, tried new batteries, tried different USB ports, and also tried it on the PS/2 port. Nothing helped. Also, I have tried this mouse on other computers and it seems to work just fine there.

I have a small update too. Right now I'm trying my brothers *wired* optical mouse and it seems to be working beautifully. None of the problems I've been experiencing with my wireless one. So, since the wired mouse works on here and my wireless one works on other computers that is leading me to believe that Ubuntu is having some sort of issue with either *my* wireless mouse or maybe even *all* wireless mice. Though I can't speak for all wireless mice because I only have my one. And it seems very odd that this only started happening after I upgraded. Everything was working fine before and I haven't changed anything (except for my Ubuntu version of course).

If got the exact same problem, and it's getting really annoying.
Sometimes I have to click to times, to open a folder, it's even sometimes make a new folder all by its self.
It's really strange, maybe it's a bug?

Given that all the dumb things like waggling wires etc has been gone through fairly rigorously in at least 1 of these cases and given that a second one has appeared it might be good if one of you (or both) could do
System - Administrator - Hardware Testing
and then submit a bug report from your machine.

Thanks,
Good luck both

Thanks for trying again the other day but i think you posted it a little too late and it quickly got swamped by other questions before anyone really looked into it. Also we've had a bug report sent in and if you look down the right hand side of the forum you'll see the link to it. I'm not sure how well it's going tho?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
