Cannot boot after Install

Asked by TKO Incognito

OK i have tried different ways to use the CD i got in mail. Ubuntu 8.0.4.1 LTS Desktop Edition.
I have in My computer AMD Phenom 9600 Quad core, 2x500gb sata hds, a Sapphire HD 3850, 8 gbs g-skill ram dual channel, and MOI K9A2-CF.

i ran the memtest and my ram shows as ddr1 at 7something MHz when its DDR2 set at 800. i have even tested trying it without installing..same result. checked the system its not overheating.not that I'm using a stock cooler. asus lion square. on newegg.com

Any way now I'm using the "ALT" Ubuntu 64-bit 8.10 CD before it would not install now all im trying to do is get it to boot. i have windows installed and ubuntu on the other hd. the is also another hd a IDE HD that I'm using for something else.
below is the results i got.

VFS: cannot open root device "<NULL>" Or unknown block(8,1)
PLease apend correct "root=" boot options; or unknown block (8,1)
Kernal panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)
This is using the cd and var/log
