Cannot get wireless network up in Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by txrking99

I have just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on an older laptop that I had been running Windows XP Professional on. I do not have any problem connecting to my router on a wired ethernet connection but I cannot get a wireless connection. I have a internal Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter as well as a Linksys WPC54GS card (Broadcom BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller). I have tried reading various posts regarding using ndiswrapper, network manger etc. I believe I installed the driver correctly as it shows up in hardware testing. Here is the text of what appears using the sudo lshw -C network command:
rick@rick-laptop:~$ sudo lshw -c network
[sudo] password for rick:

When I click on the Network Manager icon it shows both wireless cards but they are grayed out and they both show "wireless is disabled".

I am new to Linux/Ubuntu but I am computer literate. I just don't seem to be able to figure out what I am doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Some computers have a wireless switch on the side. Are you sure your wireless card is not turned off by hand?

yes I have checked that. The Intel card has a switch but the Linksys card does not. I cannot get either one of them to work.

your wifi adaptor is the BCM4306. Have you enabled the backport modules and done all the updates for ubuntu 8.10? if so, are there any restricted drivers you need to enable?

Did you try "Hardware Testing"?

Go to "System"-->"Administration"-->"Hardware Testing".

I had the same problem with my wireless, just would not work. As soon as I installed 9.04 it found it without any problem. I am also running XP 64 and 32bits on the same computer. When ever I reboot to the 64bits it will not find the wireless router, I have first reboot in 32bits and the reboot to the 64bits for it to work. So now I am trying to fid out why it will not work whenever I go back directly to the XP 64bits OS.

Can you help with this problem?
