will I be able to upgrade directly from 6.06LTS to 7.10?

Asked by Phil Stovell

I've got 2 computers running 6.06LTS, which I'm very happy with. I decided not to upgrade to 6.10 because I couldn't see any advantage and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I can't see any pressing need to go to 7.04 either, but it would be nice to have more up to date versions of the software, but because I have to upgrade via 6.10 to get to 7.04, that really negates any possible advantage.

At sometime I'm going to have to do it, and if it means I'll always have to upgrade through all intermediate versions, I'd rather get it done sooner rather than later.

Will there be a direct upgrade path from 6.06LTS to 7.10 (which I also believe is LTS)? If not, I'll have to consider upgrading sooner than I had anticipated, in order to get to 7.10 more easily.

Thanks for any advise.

Gutsy - 7.10 is not an LTS release, so you likely will not be able to go 6.06 -> 7.10 directly.
It's possible that 8.04 may be LTS but there is no guarantee.

Sorry to report, but no, you cannot upgrade from 6.06LTS to 7.10. This will possibly break your system leaving you to have to reinstall again. If 6.06LTS supports your needs, you are welcome to stay with that release.

People generally upgrade to get newer packages, added features, new libraries, etc. LTS versions may also get some of this stuff by way of backports, but they are not the always the same.

If you plan on moving up to another release go from 6.06 > 6.10 > 7.04 .. etc.

Otherwise backup your /home/username directory and other important files and reinstall if you rather not go through the hassle.

I have been on the same install since 5.04 -> 7.04, two years.. minor problems. Hope this helps you decide.

We'll certainly stay with dapper for the time being, it does everything we require, and more.

I'll look again at upgrading, closer to the next release.

Thanks for the speedy responses.
