I am looking to purchase a PCMCIA wireless networking card that will work with Ubuntu 8.10 out of the box, any suggestions?

Asked by WaveLine

I am brand new to Ubuntu...like, I've installed it on a dual-boot basis about 3 days ago, and I'm using it until I feel confident enough to totally switch over. The one major hurdle I have is that I cannot for the life of me get my wireless internet working. I'm running a Dell Insipiron 1501 which has a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card. I'm pretty displeased with the performance of this card, and I want to upgrade to a PCMCIA solution (in case I decide to upgrade my laptop later).

The thing is, I would really love a PCMCIA wireless card that just works out of the box with Ubuntu 8.10. I don't have multiple computers to run apt-get codes on and I don't really understand all this ndiswrapper nonsense yet. I'm still working on that. I've tried tutorials specifically written about my 1390 card, and I just can't get them to work. In the meantime, I just want something that will allow me to work from my office without having to deal with some of the more complex aspects of Linux life (yet...like I said, I'm still learning).

I feel a bit like a moron venturing in the land of Linux, but I really want to give it a shot. So...any suggestions on a wireless PCMCIA card to purchase? Any links or tips I should take into account?

***EDIT*** I am aware of the various compatibility FAQ's out there and I've read a few of them, however a lot don't mention 8.10 and I just really want a suggestion on a specific PCMCIA card that I could purchase. I don't have a preference on brand, just compatibility. What are you folks out there running? Did it work out of the box? I don't want to pour over various compatibility charts whilst simultaneously surfing Newegg for the product. What just...works?

Thank you all very much for the information you can provide.
