Is there a way to intall kde v3 instead of v4 on KUbuntu 8.10?

Asked by Uqbar

As I've tried KDE v4 that is lacking some features and stability I need I wish I could run KDEv3.
How can I do it?
Is it safe to later uninstall KDE v4?

You can install Kubuntu with KDE3, go to

http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/download

Unless they have changed the installer, I already downloaded "Kubuntu 8.10 - Featuring the cutting edge KDE 4" (64bit version) CDROM and got KDE v4, as expected.

Well, if you have already installed it, then you can install the KDE3 packages: you need
kdebase-bin-kde3 and a couple more, use synaptic to search for them. And then you could uninstall KDE4.

But I would really recommend to do a KDE3 installation from scratch. I tried to switch from GNOME to KDE and back with this process once and it was a bit messy. Just my advice though.

I have not been able to make a clean working kde3 install as well as a clean kde4 uninstall.
In the sense that I've ended with an incomplete kde3 and with a number of remnants of kde4.

How can I do the KDE3 installation from scratch you suggest?
It sounds the kind of thing I need.

Thanks again.

You can go to the link I posted above. Looking at it, I just realized that you get Ubuntu 8.04 instead of 8.10 together with KDE3. That's probably because they finally want to move to KDE4 and many of the 8.10 repos are already for KDE4.

Anyway, I would recommend you to try the link above (click "download 8.04 with the mature KDE3"). Kubuntu is in a transition state atm, KDE3 is being slowly abandoned and KDE4 is not really totally stable.

I am already running KUbuntu 8.04 with KDE 3.5.10 since I reverted from KUbuntu 8.10 because of problems in using it.
I am willing to use Ubuntu 8.10 (with newer kernel, tools etc) *and* KDE 3.
From what you say it seems I cannot do it with Ubuntu as 8.10 doesn't have KDE3 in the repos.
 Can anyone confirm this assumption?

OK.
This means that I need to stay with Ubuntu 8.04 until KDE4 will really be able to replace KDE3.
KDE 4 is not the future. KDE4 WILL BE the future.
Thanks.
